Humans have attempted and died by suicide since time bgean. The reasons for killing oneself vary with cultures and societies and in urban or rural settings. Suicide is now recognized as a major public health problem in the complex scenario of development and lifestyle changes. It is a very important issue cutting across diverse disciplines and sectors such as health, religion, spirituality, law, and welfare.
In general, suicide considered a sin in Islam. With regard to Islam, there is discussion of suicide in the Holy Quran and according to historical tradition suicide is a violation of a divine command contained in the holy books of Islam. An acceptance of life’s events is the cardinal factor in obedience to Allah; suicide, consequently, is an act of revolt against Allah and the perpetrator of such an act risks his wrath. In violation of divine command of Allah, if somebody dies by suicide, S/he has to bear violent punishment in the next world. “Certainly only Allah bears the knowledge of the next world and no living being knows in where s/he will die” (Sura-Lokman and article (Ayat)- 34).
“Oh Rasul (SM) gives directive to the devotees who committed offence on oneself not to lose belief & confidence in Allah’s blessings. Allah must forgive all the curses s/he contained. Certainly He is great forgiving & kind-hearted in nature” (Sura-Zumar and article (Ayat)- 53).
“The persons killed oneself in earth by which instrument, in the next world s/he must get punished by that instrument.”
In another description: “The person who will kill him/herself by which instrument, in the day of judgments s/he will be punished by the same instrument s/he used” (Sahiha Muslim, Kha: 01, Page-72; Sahiha Bukhari, Kha:01 page-182).
Result of Suicide in Islam
In light of the above-noted proved explanations it is specified that suicide is a great sin. The people who die by suicide overlap the sovereignty & will of Allah and s/he is him/herself removed from the innumerable grace of almighty Allah. This willful act is nothing but the great sin. The sin is so terrible that if a person dies by suicide in the moment of the religious war (Zihad) to get relief from acute aching of great injury during Zihad for Islam, he will not get be removed from the punishment for the sin in the next world. An awareness raising campaign from the Islam point of view of suicide may gradually decrease the suicide rate.
